5 Simple Ways to Film Better Raw Video (So Your Editor Can Work Magic)

You’re an expert in your field, not a cinematographer—and that’s completely okay. Your genius is in coaching, consulting, or creating amazing products, not fussing with camera settings. But what if a few simple, no-cost tweaks to how you hit 'record' could dramatically elevate the final video?

Getting great raw footage isn't about buying expensive gear; it's about a few key principles that set the stage for a polished, professional edit. As your creative partner, my job is to make you look great, and these simple tips will help me do that even better.

Give Your Chef the Best Ingredients

Think of our partnership like a chef and a farmer. A master chef can make a decent meal with average ingredients, but they can create a true masterpiece with fresh, high-quality produce.

As your video editor, I can work wonders with almost any footage you send my way. But when you give me clean audio and good lighting, it unlocks a whole new level of creative possibility. It allows for dynamic zooms without losing quality, crisp crops that create visual interest, and a final product that looks and feels undeniably premium. You provide the quality ingredients; I’ll craft the Michelin-star meal.

The 5 Pillars of Great Raw Video (The Simple Way)

You don't need a film degree to dramatically improve your video quality for Reels and other content. You just need to remember three pillars: Light, Sound, and Stability. Let's break down exactly what this means in practical, non-technical terms.

1. Light: Use the "Window Method"

The biggest mistake people make is filming with a bright window or lamp behind them. This puts you in shadow and makes you look like you're in a witness protection program. You don't need a fancy ring light.

  • The Fix: Simply turn around. The best and most flattering light source you have is a window. Position yourself so you are facing the window, with your phone or camera between you and the window. This soft, natural light will work wonders.

2. Sound: Your Phone is Smarter Than You Think

Bad audio is even more distracting than bad video. Echoes and background noise make viewers click away instantly. While I have tools to improve things, understanding the ROI of good audio editing starts with a clean recording.

  • The Fix: Don't shout from across the room at your phone. Instead, use the voice memo app on your phone. Place a second phone (borrow one if you need to!) just out of the camera frame, close to your mouth, and hit record on the voice memo app. When you send me your video file, send me this audio file too. I can sync them up perfectly, and the audio will be 10x crisper.

3. Stability: Your New Best Friend is a $15 Tripod

A shaky, handheld video immediately signals "amateur." It's distracting and can even be a bit nauseating for the viewer.

  • The Fix: This is the best $15 you will ever spend on your business. Buy a small, simple tripod for your phone. Prop it on your desk or a stack of books. A stable, locked-off shot looks confident and professional, every single time.

4. Clean Your Lens

Your phone has been in your pocket, your bag, and on your desk. It's covered in fingerprints and dust. This creates a soft, hazy look that degrades your video quality.

  • The Fix: Before every single take, take a soft cloth (like the one you use for your glasses) and give the camera lens a quick, gentle wipe. It’s a two-second action with a huge impact.

5. Leave Pauses (The "Clapper" Trick)

Don't start talking the second you hit record. And don't stop recording the second you finish your last word. Give me some breathing room!

  • The Fix: When you hit record, look at the camera, take a breath, and give a big, loud clap. Then begin your take. When you're done, pause, and clap again before stopping the recording. This clap creates a huge spike in the audio waveform, making it incredibly easy for me to sync your separate audio and video files perfectly.

How This Helps YOU

Mastering these basics isn't about making my job easier; it's about making your business better. When you provide high-quality raw footage, it benefits you directly.

First, it means faster turnaround times for your edits. Less time spent on "fixing" technical problems means more time spent on creative storytelling. Second, your brand's perceived value skyrockets. When your videos look effortlessly professional, your audience naturally assumes your services are, too. This is a crucial part of the "how" of outsourcing—setting your partners up for success. And once you have all this great footage, make sure you have a system for organizing your raw footage so we can work together efficiently.
